The Suburban Players are delighted to invite you to a special Directors & Actors Workshop led by actor, director and Shakespeare coach James Murray.

Working with a selection of contemporary and classic texts, over two intensive weekends, a maximum of six directors will rehearse a chosen scene with fellow actors under the guidance of the workshop leader.

Offering a rich toolkit for exploring scenes from both comedy and drama, this hands-on workshop will focus on text analysis, imagination, physical action, rehearsal process, and performance. Across two weekends, participants will develop their understanding of how to shape a scene from first reading to final presentation, on the way developing their directing, rehearsal and performance skills, while also gaining useful production insights.

For directors eager to sharpen their scene work, actors looking to deepen their craft, or someone wanting to explore both, this workshop offers a supportive and hands-on environment guided throughout by the workshop leader.

Maximum of 6 directors and 15 actors

Saturday 22 and 29th August – 10 to 17hrs

Sunday 23 and 30th August – 10 to 17 hrs

Weekend 1: Foundations & Imagination

Text analysis. Facts and given circumstances. The texture of the play.

Vision: what story do we want to tell? Working with the imagination.

Working with the senses. Actioning: verbs, objectives, and behaviour

Micro-scenes: telling the story through physical action

Scheduling rehearsals into a production calendar

Design: a basic approach to set and costume

Scene allocation: cold readings and casting

Audition essentials. Individual rehearsal technique

Group work: play and scene analysis in teams

Brainstorming: vision and texture

Designing a rehearsal plan for each scene

Between Weekends: Actors must meet at least twice during the week to rehearse their assigned scenes.

Weekend 2: Rehearsal Lab & Presentation

Rehearsals: 25 minutes per group, plus 5 minutes for set-up

Focus on objectives, obstacles, and playable actions

All participants take part in observing and giving feedback

Refining blocking, rhythm, and pace

Mood, style, and tone

Integrating text, space, and ensemble work

Dress rehearsal
